The School Meals Program (breakfast, lunch, & snacks) are federal sponsored by the U. S. D. A., created in 1946. Originally, it was just lunch, designed as a measure of national security to safeguard the health and well being of the nation’s children. The USDA determines the nutritional requirements for the meal patterns. Periodically, the USDA reviews the meal guidelines, considering new information about food consumption, eating habits, food preferences, and nutritional needs of children.
United Community Schools, Food & Nutrition Services, follows these guidelines, often serving more than the required minimum. The FNS actively pursue the USDA goal of reducing fat, sugar, and salt in school meals and increasing the consumption of fruits, vegetables and breads & grain products.
It is the policy of the USDA and the school district not to discriminate in program services for reasons of race, color, gender, age, religion, gender identity, sexual orientations, national origin or handicapping condition.
