Open Enrollment

Open Enrollment 101

Over 50% of the students that attend United CSD are open enrolled from another school district.  Open enrollment is an option for parents to request to have their students attend another school district.

How does it work?

  • Parents/guardians must complete and turn in open enrollment paperwork.  It is then approved or denied by both their resident district and the district that they are requesting to attend.

What determines if it is approved?

  • If you meet the deadlines for open enrollment (see below), the resident district will approve your request to attend another district.  The Superintendent in both districts will either approve or deny the open enrollment requests and they are then sent to the school board for final approval.  The district that you are requesting to attend will then approve or deny based on availability of spaces or programs that are available. If you miss the deadline for request, the school district can deny your request.

Is transportation provided?

  • It is the responsibility of the family to provide transportation for open enrolled students.  School district buses do not transport open enrolled students.

Is there a cost to open enroll?

  • No, there is no cost to open enroll to another school district.  State funds follow the students to the district that they are attending.

How does the State of Iowa define Open Enrollment?

  • Open Enrollment is the process by which parents/guardians residing in an Iowa district may enroll their children into another Iowa school district under the terms and conditions of Iowa Code section 282.18 and 281--Iowa Administrative Code 17.
