Guidance

THE PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING AND LEARNING GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING
IN THE UNITED COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT

The developmental guidance and counseling program is an integral part of the total school program and is founded upon two primary beliefs. First, it recognizes that each student is a worthy individual possessing unique qualities, abilities, and needs. Thus, the guidance and counseling program focuses on the identification of and provision for the individual needs of the students. Second, while acknowledging individual differences, it also recognizes that there are needs and concerns which are common to everyone. These common needs can best be met through carefully planned, sequenced programs which are provided to all students.

Guidance begins with preschool and continues throughout the individual’s life. It is a continuous process rather than events occurring at isolated times and places. While the counselor is considered a key member of the guidance team, guidance responsibilities and opportunities are present for all professional and nonprofessional school personnel, parents, appropriate related agencies, and other members of the community.

Guidance is that part of the total educational program designed to foster maximal development of individual potentialities by providing early and continual assistance to youth as they consider various choices, make decisions, and accept adjustments each must make in moving through life. The guidance and counseling services in the United Community School are designed to assist students in developing their potentials emotionally, socially, intellectually, and physically.

The guidance services will focus on developmental needs of all individuals and not just on remediation of difficulties. Therefore, this program becomes preventive in nature, not problem-oriented only. Counseling involves a relationship between the counselor and the student which allows for expression of principles, knowledge, attitudes, and feelings. Counseling is a process of working with students rather than the process of doing something to or for them. We are most concerned with helping the student to develop self-awareness and self-acceptance, to become aware of others, and establish healthy interpersonal relationships, and to improve upon decision-making relating to the awareness of the world of work and lifestyles.
